45. Freedom Saturday

Can you tell by our faces it was a chilly last outdoor market?

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Last Saturday was the 32nd straight of the Grandin Village Farmers Market Season, and we’re ready to sleep in. Moderately. I’m not complaining about the early hours; I generally consider myself a morning person and the 4:45 wake up call is often not as brutal for me as you may think. But my market help (brother Aaron and partner Chloe) likely don’t agree with that sentiment, and we’re all excited to do something besides hawk salad this morning.

It’s ultra-sweet because I have family in town this weekend. Not sure what we’ll be doing, but it’ll be valuable time spent with Mom and Dad; the first time I’ve seen them since January.

As we move into winter-mode, we have farmer markets only once monthly (the third Saturday in Dec-March). But if you’re a die hard GVH salad eater, fear not! I’d be happy to help keep you fed thru the cold months as long as I can. If you’re interested in picking up weekly winter salad greens from the fridge on my front porch, shoot me an email (GardenVarietyHarvests@gmail.com) and get on our winter list. Availability will be sent out on Friday mornings, and you can pick up Sunday afternoons.

The first seed catalog of the fall arrived yesterday (High Mowing is first out of the gate), and that anticipates the excitement of growing a bunch of new stuff! If you are a restaurateur or food business and you take local sourcing seriously, now’s the time to talk about what you want to see grown in 2020. I have a pretty open calendar now, so let’s get together and make a plan!

Over the winter, we’ll be closing up shop at two small cross-town plots, and finishing build-out of our largest garden to date. When we open the spring 2020 season, all GVH gardens will be on the east side of town within a 8-10 minute drive from home. And I’m giddy about reducing our footprint geographically. This change comes with a net addition to our landbase of about 20%. So I look forward to growing more great veggies in 2020 and driving a little less.

You’ll read more about what I’m excited about this winter in the next few blogs. For now, I’m gonna go out and enjoy Freedom Saturday with the fam! Cheers!
